It is based on the true story of Peter (Will Smith), who runs away from slavery, relying on his wits and unwavering faith to avoid cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on his journey to reunite with his family. The film is based on photographs of “Whipped Peter” taken during a Union Army medical examination in 1863, which first appeared in Harper’s Weekly. One image, known as “The Scourged Back,” depicts Peter’s bare back being mutilated by a whipping prescribed by his enslavers, which eventually contributed to growing public opposition to slavery. an enslaved man willing to go to any length for his family and freedom Peter embarks on a perilous journey of love and endurance when he risks his life to escape and return to his family.
